Making it Official
Step-Parent Adoption
Step-parent adoption gives legal weight to a relationship that, in every way that matters, already exists. Colorado law generally requires the consent of the child’s other legal parent, or a legal basis for terminating that parent’s rights, before the adoption can move forward. Kate walks families through each requirement so the process stays on track from petition to final decree.
Once finalized, adoption gives a stepparent the same legal standing as a biological parent, including the right to make decisions for the child and a place in that child’s life that can’t be undone by circumstance. Kate helps families move through the legal steps with as little friction as possible, so the focus can stay on what the adoption actually means.
